Abrantes is much more than just a picturesque town overlooking the Tagus River; it's a destination rooted in centuries of history and marked by its impressive architectural heritage, stunning landscapes, and welcoming atmosphere. On this day dedicated to this unique city, we will immerse ourselves in its historic streets, visit fascinating monuments, and appreciate the richness of its local culture. Let's embark on this journey of discovery in Abrantes, where past and present meet harmoniously.

PROGRAM

Departing from its places of origin to Abrantes. Founded in the mid-12th century by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, it has played a crucial role since its inception in important moments of our history, such as the Christian Reconquista or the French Invasions, due to its strategic geographical location. Its rich heritage tells us about this historical past.

Our tour begins with a visit to the Castle, situated on a plateau rising 200 meters above the city. It was one of the castles that formed part of the Tagus River Defense Line. From the Castle, you can enjoy spectacular views of the river and the city. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Keep, commissioned by King Dinis in 1300, the Governors' Palace, or the Palace of the Mayors, which is believed to have been built in the 15th century by the Mayor of Abrantes, Diogo Fernandes de Almeida, and the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, recently restored and which serves as the funerary pantheon of the Almeida family, Counts of Abrantes. Leisure time in the Garden to enjoy the magnificent panorama from the Castle.

Descent to the historic city center via Outeiro de São Pedro , where the King of Portugal, D. João I, and D. Nuno Álvares Pereira camped with their troops before the victorious Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.

Lunch at a local restaurant

In the afternoon, a walking tour of the city's historic center. Highlights include the Church of São Vicente, the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança , and the Chapel of Sant'Ana .

Guided tour of the Iberian Museum of Art and Archaeology, installed after the renovation of the Convent of São Domingos, where it is possible to appreciate its collection of around five thousand pieces collected in the former territory of Lusitania.

At the end of the day, a stroll along the Aquapolis riverside promenade. Return to the starting points.
