Itinerary: Idanha-a-Velha | Penha Garcia | Monsanto
This 2-day itinerary through the Historical Villages of Beira Baixa invites travelers to immerse themselves in the history and enchanting landscapes of the region, accompanied by a local guide. The first stop is Idanha-a-Velha, an ancient Roman city full of archaeological remains. Then, Monsanto, "the most Portuguese village in Portugal," charms with its granite houses embedded in enormous rocks. Finally, Penha Garcia offers panoramic views and prehistoric fossils in its cliffs. This itinerary combines history, culture, and nature in a surprising way.
PROGRAM:
Day 1: Idanha-a-Velha | Penha Garcia
Morning: Journey from the starting points. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Discover the ancient Egitânia, now known as Idanha-a-Velha. Visit the Roman walls, the Idanha Cathedral , and the Epigraphic Museum , where Roman and Visigothic inscriptions are found. Continue to Penha Garcia to explore the Fossil Route , a walk that also includes the old watermills located in the Pônsul River valley. Finally, visit the Castle. Penha Garcia , a medieval fortress with a breathtaking view over the surrounding mountains and valleys.
It will include: Dinner and hotel accommodation.
Day 2: Monsanto
Morning: Visit the unique village of Monsanto , where the stone houses blend seamlessly into the giant rocks. Hike to the top of the village, where the medieval castle stands , to enjoy breathtaking views over the region. Free time to explore the narrow streets , admire the small craft shops , and chat with the locals. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Return to the places of origin.

Feel comfortable following a guide and respecting all instructions given.
Tolerate some temperature changes and unstable weather.
