The Entre Douro e Tâmega itinerary takes you through an unexplored territory that blends the breathtaking landscapes of the Douro Valley with the rugged beauty of the Alvão mountains. Amidst vineyards, crystal-clear waters, and charming villages, travelers have the chance to uncover historical and literary heritage, explore remarkable landmarks, and immerse themselves in the serene beauty of the surroundings. This journey invites you to discover the heart of northern Portugal, where deep-rooted traditions meet the timeless allure of a region rich in diversity and authenticity.

PROGRAM:

Day 1: Amarante

Morning: Departure from the places of origin. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Guided tour of Amarante's historic center with a local expert guide, including the iconic São Gonçalo Church and Monastery. Continue with a visit to the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Municipal Museum. Free time to explore the historic center and stroll along the Tâmega River.

Evening: Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.


Day 2: Mondim de Basto | Celorico de Basto

Morning: Visit to the Nossa Senhora da Graça Sanctuary, located atop Monte Farinha. The ascent offers panoramic views of valleys and mountains, providing a unique experience immersed in nature. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Continue to Arnóia Castle, a medieval fortress that was a center of power during the Middle Ages.

Evening: Regional dinner and accommodation at the hotel.


Day 3: Alvão Natural Park | Lamas de Olo | Vila Real

Morning: Visit to the Alvão Natural Park, highlighting the Fisgas de Ermelo, one of the largest waterfalls on the Iberian Peninsula. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Visit to the traditional village of Lamas de Olo, known for preserving rural traditions. Continue to Vila Real for a walking tour of its historic center.

Evening: Regional dinner and accommodation at the hotel.


Day 4: Santa Cruz do Douro

Morning: Panoramic tour of Santa Cruz do Douro, a landscape dominated by vineyards cascading down the slopes of the Douro River. Visit to the Eça de Queiroz Foundation, dedicated to the renowned Portuguese writer, to learn about his life and work, with a focus on his connection to the region and 19th-century literature. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: After lunch, return to the places of origin.

SEATS ON THE BUS:


Seats on the bus are pre-allocated in order of where you get on the bus and date of deposit payment.

To take part in this route, you should:

  • Feel comfortable with several days of visits and an itinerary that alternates bus journeys and short walks in the places visited.

  • Be able to accompany a group at an average walking pace on sometimes uneven ground and with occasional stairs.

  • Being able to follow a medium-paced programme, which may involve getting up early on several days and only arriving at the hotel at the end of the day for dinner and a rest.

  • Feel comfortable accompanying a guide and respect all the instructions given.

  • Tolerate some temperature changes and unstable weather.
