Iberian Plateau
The candidacy of the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of the Iberian Plateau for Biosphere Reserve status has already received UNESCO's seal of approval.
This becomes the largest reserve of its kind in Europe and the 15th worldwide to be recognized.
The protected area encompasses Portuguese and Spanish sites. On the Portuguese side, it covers Terra Quente, Terra Fria, Douro Superior, and Beira Baixa. On the Spanish side, it includes Zamora and Salamanca. Within these areas, we find protected areas common to both countries, such as the Montesinho Park, Douro Internacional, Arribas do Douro, and Sanábria, but also territories belonging to the Natura 2000 Network, such as the protected area of the Azibo Reservoir, which thus accumulates another UNESCO designation, the village of Romeu in the municipality of Mirandela, and the Sierra de la Culebra on the Spanish side.
This application was in the promotion and dissemination phase a year ago. The final decision comes within the expected timeframe, which had been announced at the end of last month by Margarida Rodrigues, director of ZASNET, the entity that guided the entire application process. She had already stated at the end of May that the result of the application should be known by the second half of June.
The approval of this candidacy was confirmed yesterday in Paris.
