In four days through the Northeast Transmontano, let yourself be amazed by the diversity of this region. From the cliffs of the Douro Internacional, where the river winds between impressive escarpments, to the Montesinho Mountain, the Bragança Castle, and the traditions of Rio d’Onor, this itinerary takes you on a journey through the landscapes and cultural uniqueness of this area. Along the way, savor the unmistakable local cuisine and feel the authentic pulse of one of the most genuine regions of Portugal.

PROGRAM:


Day 1: Torre de Moncorvo | Freixo de Espada à Cinta

Morning: Journey from the starting points to Torre de Moncorvo. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Discover the historic center of this village, with a visit to the imposing Basilica of Torre de Moncorvo, known for its Gothic details and historical significance as a pilgrimage site. Then, the Sacred Art Museum offers a rich collection of religious and cultural pieces that depict centuries of devotion and local history. A tasting of the famous Moncorvo covered almonds completes the cultural and gastronomic experience. From the Fraga do Sabor viewpoint, enjoy a panoramic view of the Sabor Valley, a natural landscape that captivates with its untouched beauty. Then, take a scenic route to Freixo de Espada à Cinta. In Freixo, the group visits the Torre do Galo, the Matriz Church, and Duarte d'Armas.

Evening: Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Douro Freixo 4* or similar.

 

Day 2: Miranda do Douro

Morning: Journey to Miranda do Douro. One-hour environmental cruise along the "Arribas do Douro," providing a unique perspective of the imposing cliffs and regional biodiversity. After the cruise, enjoy a traditional lunch in Miranda do Douro, where regional cuisine stands out with typical dishes.

Afternoon: Guided tour of the city with a guide speaking the Mirandese language, offering a chance to experience Mirandese, the second official language of Portugal. Afterward, an exclusive performance of the Pauliteiros de Miranda brings traditional dances accompanied by bagpipes, offering an authentic cultural experience. Journey to Bragança.

Evening: Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Exe São Lázaro 4* or similar.

 

Day 3: Bragança | Montesinho Natural Park | Rio d'Onor

Morning: In Bragança, the guided tour begins at the medieval castle, one of the best-preserved castles in Portugal, which offers views of the city and houses the Military Museum. The Santa Maria Church and historic center reveal a village rich in history and traditional architecture. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: The group continues with a panoramic visit to Montesinho Natural Park, one of Portugal's largest protected natural areas, where local fauna and flora can be observed. The afternoon includes an interpretive visit to the community village of Rio de Onor, where visitors learn about unique community traditions and architecture that preserve centuries of shared customs.

Evening: Dinner and accommodation at Hotel Exe São Lázaro 4* or similar.

 

Day 4: Macedo de Cavaleiros | Podence | Azibo Reservoir | Mirandela

Morning: The last day begins with a walking tour of Macedo de Cavaleiros, followed by a visit to the Geopark Terras de Cavaleiros, featuring the Azibo Reservoir, a nature reserve ideal for hiking and observing local wildlife. In Podence, the Casa do Careto showcases the tradition of the "Caretos," masked characters that are a hallmark of the Entrudo Chocalheiro, classified as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The visit ends in Mirandela, where the group strolls through the historic center and experiences the local hospitality. Lunch at a typical restaurant.

Afternoon: Return to the starting points.
