Portugal of Writers and Artists is a ten-day cultural itinerary that travels across Portugal from south to north, revealing the richness of its identity through literature, visual arts, architecture, music, and heritage. Among historic cities, museums, writers' homes, UNESCO-listed monuments, and centuries-old artistic traditions, this route invites you to discover the country through the works, places, and personalities that have shaped Portuguese culture, providing a unique experience where art and literature walk hand in hand.
PROGRAM:
Day 1: Lisbon
Morning : Arrival in Lisbon and start of the city exploration through Baixa Pombalina and Chiado. Visit to the Santa Justa Lift, Carmo Convent, Largo de Camões and Bertrand Bookstore , the oldest operating bookstore in the world. Continue to the emblematic Café A Brasileira , associated with the figure of Fernando Pessoa, and the D. Maria II National Theatre , with emphasis on the figure of Almeida Garrett .
Afternoon : Stroll through the historic Alfama district, with a visit to the Fado Museum and the José Saramago Foundation , housed in Casa dos Bicos, exploring the connection between literature, music, and Portuguese cultural identity.
It will be : A traditional dinner accompanied by a Fado show , providing an immersion in the most emblematic Portuguese musical expression.
Day 2: Lisbon
Morning : Discover the monumental area of Belém, with a visit to the Monument to the Discoveries, Belém Tower, National Coach Museum, Church of Santa Maria de Belém and Jerónimos Monastery , two of the most important monuments classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Tasting of the traditional Pastéis de Belém (Belém custard tarts ).
Afternoon : Visit to the National Museum of Ancient Art , a major reference point for Portuguese art. Continue to the Time Out Market for leisure time and discovery of national gastronomy, complemented by contemplation of urban art dedicated to the works of Vhils and Bordalo II.

Day 3: Sintra | Mafra
Morning : Departure for Sintra, with a visit to the National Palace of Sintra and the Sintra Museum of Arts . Continue to the Ferreira de Castro Museum and a literary tour inspired by Eça de Queirós , including a stop at the historic Hotel Lawrence. Free time to sample the famous Travesseiros de Sintra (Sintra pastries ).
Afternoon : Continuation to Mafra, with a visit to the National Palace of Mafra , including the Museum of Music , simultaneously evoking the Baroque monumentality and the literary universe of José Saramago in Memorial do Convento , followed by free time for tasting the typical Fradinhos (a local pastry). Visit to the José Franco Village-Museum , dedicated to traditional Portuguese arts and crafts.

Day 4: Arraiolos | Évora | Estremoz
Morning : Departure for Arraiolos, with a visit to the Arraiolos Carpet Interpretation Centre and a demonstration of the artisanal technique that has made these carpets internationally renowned.
Afternoon : Continue to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city, with a visit to the Roman Temple, the Cathedral, the Church of São Francisco, and the Chapel of Bones . Proceed to Estremoz, where you will visit the Berardo Estremoz Museum , dedicated to the art of Portuguese tilework, and the Interpretive Center of the Estremoz Figurine , an artistic expression recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Day 5: Tomar | Minde | Caldas da Rainha
Morning : Trip to Tomar to visit the Convent of Christ and Tomar Castle , classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites, as well as the old Synagogue, the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Mill – Arts Factory and the unique Match Museum .
Afternoon : Stop in Minde to visit the Alfredo Roque Gameiro Watercolor Museum , then continue to Caldas da Rainha, where highlights include the Ceramics Museum , the Bordallo Pinheiro Shop , and the José Malhoa Museum . Stroll through the historic center, focusing on the Zé Povinho Monument and the emblematic figures of Bordallo Pinheiro . Free time for tasting the Cavacas das Caldas (a local pastry) .

Day 6: Coimbra

Afternoon : Stroll through the Torre de Anto and the historic bookstores of Quebra-Costas . Continue to the Santa Cruz Monastery and Quinta das Lágrimas , eternally linked to the legend of King Pedro and Inês de Castro, evoking the strong connection between history, heritage, and literature.
It will be : A traditional dinner in Coimbra, with the possibility of attending a Coimbra Fado performance.
Day 7: Vila Real | Peso da Régua | Santa Cruz do Douro
Morning : Departure for Vila Real to visit Casa de Mateus , one of the most remarkable examples of Portuguese Baroque architecture, surrounded by historic gardens.
Afternoon : Continue to Peso da Régua for a visit to the Douro Museum , interpreting the UNESCO-classified Wine Cultural Landscape. Proceed to Santa Cruz do Douro, where the Eça de Queirós Foundation honors one of the greatest Portuguese writers, providing a privileged reading of his life and work within the context of the Douro landscape.

Day 8: Amarante | Vila Nova de Famalicão | São Miguel de Seide
Morning : Discover Amarante, with a visit to the Church and Convent of São Gonçalo and the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Municipal Museum , dedicated to one of the leading figures of Portuguese modernism. Free time for tasting São Gonçalos or Brisas do Tâmega wines .
Afternoon : Continue to Vila Nova de Famalicão, with a visit to the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation , renowned for its collections of contemporary art and surrealism. Proceed to São Miguel de Seide for a visit to the Camilo Castelo Branco House-Museum , where the life and work of the author of Amor de Perdição are explored.

Day 9: Guimarães | Viana do Castelo
Morning : Visit to the historic center of Guimarães, considered the Cradle of the Nation, including the Castle , the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza , Santiago Square and Largo da Oliveira , as well as the Alberto Sampaio Museum , dedicated to sacred art and the heritage of the region.
Afternoon : Continue to Viana do Castelo, ascending to the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia to appreciate one of the most beautiful panoramic views over the Minho coast. Visit the Viana do Castelo Costume Museum and the Museum of Decorative Arts , which preserve important examples of the region's folk art and traditions.

Day 10: Porto
Morning : Discover the historic center of Porto, with a stroll along the Ribeira , a visit to the Church and Museum of São Francisco, Dom Luís I Bridge, Palácio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange Palace), São Bento Station, Sé Cathedral, Carmo Church, and Clérigos Tower . Continue to Livraria Lello , one of the most emblematic bookstores in the world.
Afternoon : Visit to the Filigree Museum and the Soares dos Reis National Museum , dedicated to Portuguese painting, sculpture and decorative arts. The route includes an urban art itinerary, highlighting works by Vhils and Bordalo II , symbols of contemporary artistic creation.

Being able to follow a moderate-paced program, which may involve getting up early for several days and only arriving at the hotel at the end of the day to have dinner and rest.
Feel comfortable following a guide and respecting all instructions given.
