Camilian Itinerary
Itinerary: Vila Real / Vilarinho de Samardã / Ribeira de Pena / Cavez / Braga / São Miguel de Seide / Porto
Follow in the restless footsteps of Camilo Castelo Branco on an intense journey through his life, passions, and tragedies. A route that traverses childhood memories, forbidden loves, compulsive writing, and creative solitude—from the mountains of Trás-os-Montes to the prison cells of Porto. Three days among literary villages, house-museums, churches marked by life decisions, and spaces of seclusion where part of the great Portuguese literature was born. A journey that crosses landscape, drama, and romantic genius.
PROGRAM
Day 1 – Vila Real | Vilarinho de Samardã | Ribeira de Pena | Cavez
Morning: Journey from the places of origin to Vila Real. Visit to the historic center, Camilo's House and the Church of São Pedro . Context of informal studies and early literary initiation. Camilo-themed lunch at the Passos Perdidos Restaurant (Vilarinho de Samardã).
Afternoon: Walking tour in Vilarinho da Samardã and visit to the village and the house where Camilo spent part of his childhood and was raised by an aunt. Reading of excerpts from letters and texts evoking the rural environment.
It will include: Dinner and accommodation in a 4-star hotel in Mondim de Basto.
Day 2: Ribeira de Pena | Braga | São Miguel de Seide
Morning: Start the day in Ribeira de Pena with a visit to the Church of the Divine Savior (where Camilo celebrated his first marriage). Continue to Braga. Guided tour of the Church and Chapel of Bom Jesus. Lunch at a local restaurant in Braga.
Afternoon: Full visit to Camilo's house . Tour of the interiors, personal objects, and writing space. Highlights include his relationship with Ana Plácido, his intense literary production, and his years of isolation. Departure for Porto.
It will include: Dinner and accommodation in Porto.
Day 3: Porto
Morning: Stroll through the historic center of Porto. Guided visit to the Romantic Museum and the Crystal Palace Gardens.
Afternoon: Visit to the Portuguese Photography Centre , located in the former Cadeia da Relação prison , where Camilo was imprisoned with Ana Plácido. Return to the places of origin.

To participate in this itinerary, you must:
Feel comfortable with several days of visits and an itinerary that alternates between bus journeys and short walks through the places visited.
To be able to keep up with a group at an average walking pace on sometimes uneven terrain and occasional stairs.
Being able to follow a moderate-paced program, which may involve getting up early for several days and only arriving at the hotel at the end of the day to have dinner and rest.
Feel comfortable following a guide and respecting all instructions given.
Tolerate some temperature changes and unstable weather.
