The city of Santarém holds a very important collection from the Gothic period. This one-day cultural tour, led by a specialized technical guide, will take you through the richness of the city's Gothic heritage. Focusing on the Church of Santa Clara and the Convent of São Francisco, this visit to Santarém also includes other examples of Gothic architecture such as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça and São João de Alporão, as well as the Chafariz das Figueiras fountain.

PROGRAM:

Departure from the places of origin to Santarém. Guided tour of the Church of Santa Clara , located in one of the districts of Santarém, in an area that was outside the city walls. It is a 13th-century temple, commissioned by King Afonso III (1248-1279) for his daughter, Leonor Afonso, who professed there and died there. It is a characteristic example of mendicant Gothic architecture, notable for its eight bays marked by tall columns and carved capitals. Lighting is provided by a rose window and multiple slits and windows.

Walking tour to the Convent of St. Francis, passing by the Chafariz das Figueiras fountain , a rare example of 14th-century Gothic civil architecture.

Guided tour of the Convent of St. Francis , founded by King Sancho II in Built in 1242 in the mendicant Gothic style, it features austere decoration, a spacious three-nave interior, a projecting transept, and an apse with five adjacent chapels (forming a cross-shaped plan). The convent has been altered several times over the centuries. Today, its structure bears striking signs of various periods, from Gothic to Baroque, including Manueline and Renaissance.

Continuing our visit to the Church of Our Lady of Grace: Built in the 14th/15th centuries, this is a large and beautiful temple characteristic of the full Portuguese Gothic style. Due to its lengthy construction, it is possible to identify two distinct periods: the mendicant Gothic, marked by the floor plan and the simple interior decoration, and the influence of the flamboyant Gothic of the Batalha Monastery, evident in the façade where the portico and the unique rose window stand out.

Church of St. John of Alporão / Museum of Art and Archaeology: Built in the 12th/13th centuries, this church is part of a transitional period between Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The museum located inside holds a priceless archaeological and cultural collection.

Optional visit to the Church of Santa Cruz (Ribeira de Santarém) , built in the mid-13th century in Gothic style, although it includes elements of other architectural styles.
