The Serra do Açor tour unveils the authenticity and natural beauty of Portugal’s inland regions. Amidst schist villages, crystal-clear rivers, and mountainous landscapes, the journey leads to places of great historical and cultural significance. Explore the centuries-old churches and panoramic viewpoints of Coja, Barril de Alva, and Avô, where traditions and breathtaking scenery converge. The Historic Village of Piódão, with its schist houses and unique church, captivates visitors before discovering the refreshing waters of Foz d’Égua and the natural pools nestled among medieval bridges.

In Fajão, the majestic rock formations and the lush Mata da Margaraça forest reveal the rich biodiversity of the region, offering unforgettable trails and an authentic nature experience.

PROGRAMME:


Day 1: Coja | Barril de Alva | Vila Cova de Alva | Avô

Morning: Travel from departure points to Coja, known as the "Princess of the Alva River," renowned for its charming streams and tranquil landscapes. Enjoy a guided walk through the village before a traditional regional lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Continue to Barril de Alva, where the Alva River flows serenely through the mountainous scenery. A short drive leads to Vila Cova de Alva, a village with cobbled streets and traditional houses. The day concludes with a visit to Avô, a town famous for its medieval castle and idyllic river beach, offering stunning views of the Alva River.

Evening: Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel.



Day 2: Aldeia das Dez | Chãs d'Égua | Foz d'Égua | Piódão

Morning: Visit Aldeia das Dez, a mountain village with breathtaking panoramic views over Serra do Açor, offering a peaceful and scenic atmosphere. Lunch at a local restaurant featuring regional specialties.

Afternoon: Explore Chãs d'Égua and Foz d'Égua, home to some of the most picturesque landscapes in the region, with stone bridges and crystal-clear waters forming a natural river beach. The journey continues to Piódão, a storybook-like schist village with narrow winding streets and slate-roofed houses.

Evening: Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel.



Day 3: Mata da Margaraça | Fajão

Morning: Walk through Mata da Margaraça, one of Portugal’s last remaining virgin forests, known for its rich biodiversity and rare natural beauty. The forest offers a unique immersive experience in nature, with ancient trees and diverse wildlife. Next, visit the Penedos de Fajão, imposing rock formations with breathtaking valley views. Explore Fajão, a rustic and charming mountain village, with a scenic viewpoint offering panoramic landscapes.

Afternoon: Return journey to the departure points.

SEATS ON THE BUS:


Seats on the bus are pre-allocated in order of where you get on the bus and date of deposit payment.

To take part in this route, you should:

  • Feel comfortable with several days of visits and an itinerary that alternates bus journeys and short walks in the places visited.

  • Be able to accompany a group at an average walking pace on sometimes uneven ground and with occasional stairs.

  • Being able to follow a medium-paced programme, which may involve getting up early on several days and only arriving at the hotel at the end of the day for dinner and a rest.

  • Feel comfortable accompanying a guide and respect all the instructions given.

  • Tolerate some temperature changes and unstable weather.
