Itinerary: Cabeceiras de Basto | Mondim de Basto | Celorico de Basto | Ribeira de Pena | Alvão Natural Park
This 3-day itinerary through the Basto region invites visitors to explore an area rich in history, culture, and stunning natural landscapes. Starting in Mondim de Basto, the route offers the opportunity to discover historical landmarks such as Arnóia Castle and Refojos Monastery, explore the ancient rock engravings of Campelo and Crastoeiro, and enjoy outdoor activities at the Fisgas de Ermelo waterfalls and in the Alvão Natural Park. The route combines the tranquility of traditional towns and villages with the imposing mountains and rivers, providing a memorable experience amidst the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Basto region.
PROGRAM:
Day 1: Mondim de Basto
Morning: Journey from the starting points to Mondim de Basto. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Visit to the Rock Engravings of Campelo and Crastoeiro, which date back to the prehistoric period, where you can see representations engraved in the rock made by the first inhabitants of the region thousands of years ago. Visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace , at the top of Monte Farinha, whose ascent provides breathtaking panoramic views over the valleys and mountains of the region.
It will include: Dinner and hotel accommodation.
Day 2: Cabeceiras de Basto | Celorico de Basto
Morning: Departure for Cabeceiras de Basto and visit to the magnificent Monastery of São Miguel de Refojos, an impressive example of Baroque architecture. Afterwards, visit to Arnóia Castle , a medieval fortification that was an important center of power in the Middle Ages.
Afternoon: Ascent to the Chapel of Our Lady of Viso , with panoramic views over the surrounding valleys.
It will be: Return to the hotel for free time. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Alvão Natural Park
Morning: Discover the Alvão Natural Park , a protected area offering breathtaking landscapes of mountains, deep valleys, and impressive waterfalls, such as the famous Fisgas de Ermelo, one of the largest waterfalls in the Iberian Peninsula. Finally, visit the village of Lamas de Olo , a preserved village where agricultural traditions and rural life remain alive. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Return to the starting points.

Feel comfortable with several days of visits and an itinerary that alternates bus journeys and short walks in the places visited.
Be able to accompany a group at an average walking pace on sometimes uneven ground and with occasional stairs.
Being able to follow a medium-paced programme, which may involve getting up early on several days and only arriving at the hotel at the end of the day for dinner and a rest.
Feel comfortable accompanying a guide and respect all the instructions given.
Tolerate some temperature changes and unstable weather.
