Itinerary: Castelo Branco | Idanha - a - Nova | Vila Velha de Ródão | Portas de Ródão | Castelo Rei Wamba
This 2-day itinerary in the Tejo Internacional region offers an immersive experience in the culture and natural beauty of the area. We begin in Castelo Branco, where a stroll through the Jardim do Paço Episcopal delights visitors, followed by the Rota dos Museus, with visits to two of the city's most iconic museums. We continue to Idanha-a-Nova, where we explore the Centro de Interpretação de Arte Rupestre do Vale do Tejo, which highlights the region's historical significance. The journey proceeds to Vila Velha de Ródão, where a boat ride through the Portas de Ródão, a geological monument of great beauty and importance to Portugal's natural heritage, awaits. The itinerary culminates with a climb to the Castelo do Rei Wamba, offering a panoramic view of the region and a rich dive into medieval history.
PROGRAM:
Day 1: Castelo Branco | Idanha-a-Nova
Morning: Journey from the departure location to Castelo Branco. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Begin the tour in Castelo Branco with a visit to the iconic Jardim do Paço Episcopal. Then, follow the Museum Route, highlighting the Cargaleiro Museum, which houses a collection of contemporary art by the painter, and the Museum of Embroidery, to discover the traditional embroidery of Castelo Branco.
In Idanha-a-Nova, visit the Centro de Interpretação de Arte Rupestre do Vale do Tejo to explore prehistoric rock engravings that reveal the life and culture of the ancient inhabitants of this region.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at a hotel.
Day 2: Vila Velha de Ródão | Portas de Ródão Boat Tour | Castelo Rei Wamba
Morning: Head to Vila Velha de Ródão to embark on a boat tour along the Tejo River, navigating the majestic Portas de Ródão, an impressive geological formation marking the narrow passage of the river between two rocky cliffs. During the tour, discover the local fauna and flora. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Climb to the Castelo do Rei Wamba, located at the top of a hill, offering spectacular views over the Portas de Ródão and the Tejo River. The castle has a fascinating history, linked to the Visigothic period and the legendary figure of King Wamba. Return to the original location.

To take part in this route, you should:
Feel comfortable with several days of visits and an itinerary that alternates bus journeys and short walks in the places visited.
Be able to accompany a group at an average walking pace on sometimes uneven ground and with occasional stairs.
Being able to follow a medium-paced programme, which may involve getting up early on several days and only arriving at the hotel at the end of the day for dinner and a rest.
Feel comfortable accompanying a guide and respect all the instructions given.
Tolerate some temperature changes and unstable weather.
